DNA Markers – The Genetic Signposts Revolutionizing Biology

HOOK

DNA markers are the genetic signposts that guide modern biology—from plant breeding to forensic science.

HISTORY / ORIGIN

In 1985, Sir Alec Jeffreys developed the variable-number tandem repeat method, giving researchers the first DNA fingerprints. The main breakthrough came with the invention of PCR, enabling any genomic region to be amplified and analyzed. Early efforts focused on restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs).

TYPES OF DNA MARKERS

RFLPs – Restriction fragment length polymorphisms.

RAPD – Random amplified polymorphic DNA.

AFLP – Amplified fragment length polymorphisms.

SSRs – Simple sequence repeats.

SNPs – Single nucleotide polymorphisms.

MATERIALS / KEY FEATURES

DNA markers detect sequence variation. They can be codominant (like SNPs) or dominant (like AFLPs). Modern systems combine genome-wide coverage with codominant inheritance patterns.

BENEFITS / WHY CHOOSE DNA MARKERS

✅ Accelerate trait selection in breeding

✅ Enable marker-assisted selection

✅ Support genomic research

✅ Used in forensic science

✅ Essential for conservation genetics

CARE TIPS / USAGE TIPS
